deSERVICEGARAGE presents ‘Het Wezen van de Stad’ by Maurice Bogaert. ‘Het Wezen van de Stad’ is a work about the city as the protagonist. The city as an organism; the city as a beast, with its buildings as its organs and the people the gadflies, the quack doctors trying to define the being, interpret the beast.

‘Het Wezen van de Stad’ is a work about the cinematic qualities of the city. A breathing and constantly changing city. A city in a perpetual transition, an ever repeating (movie) sequence of demolition, construction, tearing down and rebuilding. ‘Het Wezen van de Stad’ is a fusion of an installation, live cinema and written text.

With a text written by Simone Hogendijk and spoken by Klaas Postmus, a recording by Roald van Oosten and typography by Bram Nijssen /

Since a couple of years, Maurice Bogaert has been developing a series of works which engage, each in different ways, with what he proposes to call filmic architecture. In these works he explores the relationships between scale models, sets, architecture and the moving image. Sometimes his works are large walkthrough installations – at other times they are infinite small-scale models and prototypes.
